I enjoyed both of these books! But they also make me very frustrated on a level because they are very close to being excellent books, but seem to fall short in several areas. I enjoy the playing with cliches, but sometimes I feel like the books fall prey to the cliches they're playing with, and the times when Cashore's writing lags or fails to deliver feel very loud ( since, in general, I think the books are relatively good ).
I love the threads of discussion on power use and abuse, however. And Cashore has made some truly interesting and unlikable villains as well as some truly heroic ... heroes.
I hope she continues to grow as a writer, because I would love to see more from her.
